Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a cell-mediated autoimmune condition characterised by repeated episodes of inflammation of the nervous tissue in the brain and spinal cord, causing loss of the insulating myelin sheath.
The causes of MS are not completely understood but the autoimmune process appears to be caused both by genetic and environmental factors – eg, viral infections in early life. Minor viral infections frequently precipitate relapses.
MS may present with:
- Fatigue
- Vision problems
- Numbness and tingling
- Pain
- Stiffness, weakness, muscle spasms and mobility problems
- Bowel and bladder control problems
- Sexual dysfunction
- Anxiety and depression
- Problems with thinking, learning and planning
- Slurred speech and difficulties swallowing.
I was diagnosed with secondary progressive multiple sclerosis. I have read such wonderful stories about hyperbaric oxygen therapy that I had to give it a try. I have noticed that my circulation is way better. The swelling in my leg has decreased a lot. I am steadier and stronger when I stand or I am doing things.
